Deadly thunderstorms hit France after record-breaking heatwave

  • Two people have died in France after violent thunderstorms struck overnight, following a prolonged heatwave.
  • A woman was killed by a falling tree in Saint-Victurnien, and a man died in a workshop fire caused by a lightning strike in Dolomieu.
  • The storms left 53,000 households without power, mainly affecting the Auvergne Rhone-Alpes and Nouvelle Aquitaine regions.
  • Météo-France has since lifted the orange alert for thunderstorms in all previously affected departments of Southeastern France.
  • The storms occurred after a record heatwave last month, which saw a nearly one-third surge in deaths, with at least 2,000 more fatalities than the previous week.
