In Dec 2025, MACC’s Chief Commissioner reportedly said his contract at the post had been extended 3 times and that this could probably be his last term when it ends in 2026.
One way or another, he will definitely have to leave.
It is when.
How many more times is PMX going to extend his contract that will allow him to stay in his post?
Post the GE due to be held on later than Feb 2028?
If PMX return as PMXI, probably the Chief Commissioner’s tenure will be extended since he is doing his work, as articulated by you in justifying for his past 3 extension.
If PMX failed to return as PM, whoever succeeds him will most probably wants someone he can trust to sit in that position.
During this interim, why don’t you look into the restructuring of the governance of MACC?
Rather than merely changing its leadership, remove MACC out from executive control.
Move MACC out of the Prime Minister's Department to operate under the direct purview of Parliament so that investigations are free from political interference.
Legislate new laws before the next GE focusing on misconduct in public office, regulation of public fundraising/NGOs, and political financing to close loopholes and concurrently provide greater clarity and are applied consistently, measures which have already been proposed by the present Chief Commissioner.
While leadership is important, deep-seated structural changes are viewed as necessary to curb selective prosecution and enhance the agency's credibility.
Reform the appointment and dismissal process and procedures of the MACC Chief Commissioner to ensure merit-based, non-partisan leadership e.g an independent commission to manage the process and procedures.
If there are no changes to the above, whoever set to replace the present Chief Commissioner will face the same issues days or months into their job.
This could be your enduring legacy as the PM of Malaysia.
