There are a lot of disrespect problem with a lot of our politicians today.
Being disrespectful is not the culture in this country.
There is an `unwillingness' now of politicians not even giving a hearing to the other side.
Each side defended its own.
Quality debate has been missing from the political landscape.
It is no longer possible for the politicians to discuss issues rationally at all.
There is no civility amongst the politicians.
People can disagree, in fact often.
But when they disrespect others, it puts a wall between them i.e that conversation isn’t happening.
There is a trend where politicians just yell at each other now, earning points with their supporters and showing off how disdainful they are about their perceived political enemies.
And right now, most of the politicians from both sides of the divide are not listening.
It is not that they are disagreeing.
It is that they are not respecting each other’s views.
They mock and insult each other.
How many times have opposing politicians disrespected each other when the other side were only expressing their opinion?
The country needs these politicians to shed this mentality i.e disrespecting others.
The ability and willingness to debate any topic is important.
A decent conversation might allow a compromise to emerge.
Sharing different opinions is vital as it allows both sides to see things in different lights and perhaps shape each other’s view of the world accordingly.
Even though it is highly likely the discussions will not yield any meaningful results at the end, the country needs the politicians to be open and have respectful discussion on topics such as the benefits of reducing government control on the economy, free speech, fighting terrorist groups who are spreading violence and death all over the world, about the importance of globalization, the responsibility the wealthy have towards society and inequality.
It is about shaping the future with what we have learned from the past.
It is time the politicians go back to school and learn to disagree without disrespect so that they may learn from each other and change the country.
