A VIETNAMESE woman is due to be charged tomorrow in a high profile hit and run case that claimed the life of a Form Six student from a renowned school in Penang.
The tragedy also saw another student injured from the collision near the SMJK Heng Ee (or Heng Ee High School along Jalan Hamiton in George Town.
George Town district police chief Razlam Abdul Hamid confirmed the matter, citing that the suspect would face two charges at the George Town magistrates’ court under the Road Transport Act 1987.
The two charges are framed as reckless driving under Section 44(1)(a) until it caused death while driving under the influence and Section 44(1A)(a) for causing injury under similar circumstances,” he said.
It was previously reported that the accident occurred on Feb 19.
While walking home after a meal along with two friends, the 18-year-old Form Six student was struck by the foreigner’s car causing her death.
The driver then fled from the scene.
The family of the deceased were in an uproar, accusing the authorities of being late in prosecuting the driver, saying that justice delayed is deemed injustice to them and the deceased.
Meanwhile, Penang deputy chief police officer Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin urged the public to be wary of the 2.6 million vehicles expected to enter Penang during the Hari Raya Adilfitri festive season.
In view of this, he said that the relevant authorities are ramping up traffic control efforts.
A total of 331 traffic police officers will be deployed to monitor the roads and enforce regulations under Ops Selamat.
"We estimate that approximately 2.6 million vehicles will enter Penang via the highway. A total of 331 traffic policemen will be deployed to monitor and enforce road regulations under Ops Selamat during this period."
He urged road users to drive safely during this period and to heed the instructions of officers at all times, especially when encountering congestion. - March 26, 2025
