Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 5,119 as rescue teams recover bodies and thousands remain homeless after twin June quakes

CARACAS: The death toll from Venezuela’s twin earthquakes last month has risen to 5,119, according to an official tally released Saturday.

That was an increase of 50 deaths since Friday and comes 24 days since the June 24 disaster when back-to-back earthquakes struck, most severely affecting La Guaira, a coastal state near the capital Caracas.

The number of injured remains unchanged at 16,740, according to information posted on Telegram by the president of the Venezuelan parliament, Jorge Rodriguez.

In La Guaira, the recovery of bodies continues from the rubble of dozens of collapsed buildings. Thousands of people are homeless and others are staying in temporary camps.

Venezuelan authorities have not provided an estimate for the number of people still missing.
