MEXICO CITY, July 7 - The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela almost two weeks ago has risen to 3,535, according to official figures released on Monday.
The German News Agency (dpa) reported that the coastal state of La Guaira has been among the hardest-hit areas following the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes on June 24, with thousands of people still missing.
The United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the UN and its partners continued to scale up assistance to those affected.
In a statement, it said that some search-and-rescue teams remained on the ground, while other specialised support teams, from medical to engineering, continued to arrive in Venezuela.
Critical services, including electricity and telecommunications, were being progressively restored.
OCHA added that at least 79 transitional camps in stadiums and sports centres were operational to host displaced people and provide aid. Some 17,000 people lost their homes in the tremors.
