Death toll in Kunak road crash rises to four

KUNAK: Another victim of Tuesday’s accident along the Kunak-Semporna road died while receiving treatment on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to four.

Kunak District Police Chief Supt Rejali Angong said the latest victim was a 32-year-old man who was a passenger in the vehicle.

He said the man had been receiving intensive treatment at Tawau Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for serious injuries sustained in the crash, but his condition later deteriorated and he was pronounced dead by the hospital on Wednesday.

Rejali said three people were earlier killed at the scene when the Perodua Viva they were travelling in crashed at Km7 of the Kunak-Semporna road on Tuesday afternoon.

They were the 39-year-old male driver, a 52-year-old female passenger and an eight-year-old girl, while two other child passengers sustained minor injuries.

“Six people, including the driver, were travelling in the vehicle when it lost control and skidded, causing some of its occupants to be thrown out,” he said.

The vehicle was travelling from Kalabakan to Kg Sungai Langgas in Kunak at the time of the incident.

Rejali reminded motorists to comply with traffic regulations and exercise caution while driving.
