Deaths from Inday, monsoon rains rise

THE combined effects of the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) and Typhoon Inday have affected more than 123,000 families, while the death toll has risen to 18, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said on Sunday.

The OCD said it was verifying reports of the 18 fatalities, as well as seven injuries and 12 missing persons.

Ten of the deaths were recorded in Malapatan, Sarangani; six in Calanogas, Lanao del Sur; and two in Bukidnon. Most of the deaths were attributed to drowning and landslides.

The injuries were recorded in Malapatan, Calanogas, and Torrijos in Marinduque; Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental; and Baguio City.

Seven of the missing persons were reported in Jose Abad Santos and five in Calanogas.

The OCD said 4,200 families, or about 16,200 individuals, were staying in 116 evacuation centers.

The agency said government assistance distributed to affected families has reached P28.57 million, consisting of food packs and other relief supplies.

Authorities also urged residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant as intermittent rains from the enhanced monsoon continue to threaten several areas in the country.
