SHAH ALAM, Oct 19 — The project to deepen and strengthen Sungai Klang’s banks commences on November 1, in hopes of overcoming flood problems in Selangor and the Klang Valley.

State executive councillor for infrastructure Izham Hasmin said the river will be deepened by two to three metres, and will first be carried out in sensitive and shallow areas including Kota Kemuning, Sri Muda and Sungai Kandis.

“According to the technical studies on river crosses and shallow areas, it is necessary to deepen it immediately and reduce flooding risks, while allowing waters to drain more quickly and smoothly.

“So, we will start in those areas first followed by other locations, with the project expected to be completed within a year,” he said.

Izham was speaking at the handover ceremony for flood response equipment donated by Koridor Utiliti Selangor Sdn Bhd (Kusel) to local authorities and several Selangor District and Land Offices earlier today, in preparation for the floods expected at the end of this year.

The councillor added he has discussed with Tenaga Nasional Berhad on ensuring the electricity supply in high-risk areas will not be affected.

“Discussions with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission were also held to ensure sufficient electricity supply, including providing mobile power generators at telecommunication towers so transmitters can function properly during the floods,” he said.
