With the number of non-Bumiputera personnel at just around 3%, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has urged for more non-Bumiputera citizens to join the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), especially the Army.
According to BERNAMA, Mohamad Hasan urged for more non-Bumiputera youths to come forward and consider careers as members of the armed forces. Toward this end, the Defence Minister says that various efforts are in place to attract more non-Bumiputera individuals, with an aim of achieving more than 10% participation.
He asserted,
“Despite various efforts, including roadshows and promotions, we have not achieved a satisfactory level of non-Bumiputera participation. I urge more non-Bumiputera youths to come forward and consider careers as members of the armed forces.
“The remuneration and military service benefits are improving. We aim to achieve more than 10 per cent participation from non-Bumiputeras.”
Mohamad Hasan added that support and encouragement from parents and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) play a crucial role in attracting more non-Bumiputera individuals to pursue careers in the military.
Meanwhile, at a press conference after the passing-out parade of young male soldiers series 197/23 and young female soldiers series 48/23 at the Army Basic Training Centre today, the Defence Minister also revealed that the current intake received an encouraging response from Diploma holders despite the minimum qualification requirement is SPM.
He said that this is because many individuals view the military as a good career and understand that it opens up opportunities to further their education and build a better future.
