The recent death threats directed towards lawyers questioning the constitutionality of provisions within the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment (1) 2019 are not just alarming but indicative of a worrying trend in our society.

Threatening violence against individuals for engaging in legal processes and expressing dissent undermines the very foundations of our democratic principles.

It is deeply concerning that individuals feel compelled to resort to such extreme measures simply because they disagree with the legal actions taken by these lawyers.

The rule of law is fundamental to a functioning society, and everyone should be able to engage in legal processes without fear of reprisal or intimidation.

Furthermore, such threats not only endanger the safety and well-being of the targeted individuals but also have a chilling effect on freedom of expression and the pursuit of justice.

Lawyers play a crucial role in upholding the principles of justice and ensuring that laws are applied fairly and constitutionally. Threatening them for fulfilling their professional duties is an affront to the legal profession and undermines the integrity of our legal system.

The response from law enforcement authorities to investigate these threats is commendable, and it is essential that those responsible for making such threats are held accountable for their actions.

Additionally, efforts must be made to address the root causes of such behaviour, including promoting a culture of respect for differing opinions and a commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful and lawful means.

The recent ruling by the Federal Court, declaring certain provisions of the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment (1) 2019 null and void, underscores the importance of robust legal processes in upholding the supremacy of the constitution and ensuring the protection of individual rights. Dissenting voices should be welcomed and engaged with constructively, rather than silenced through threats and intimidation.

In conclusion, the threats against lawyers involved in challenging the constitutionality of certain provisions highlight broader issues related to the rule of law, freedom of expression, and respect for legal processes.

It is incumbent upon all Malaysians to condemn such behaviour and uphold the principles of democracy, justice, and the rule of law.
