The Delhi Government will organise a large-scale cleanliness and awareness campaign along the Yamuna riverbanks on June 14 under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The initiative, titled ‘Maa Yamuna Riverbank Cleanliness Drive’, will be conducted simultaneously at 28 ghats and riverfront locations across the city under the theme ‘Ek Sankalp – Swachh Yamuna’. The campaign aims to promote river conservation, improve cleanliness along the Yamuna and encourage public participation in environmental protection.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will lead the drive at Thokar No. 14, Geeta Colony Ghat, where thousands of residents, volunteers and representatives of social organisations are expected to participate in shramdaan activities.
Highlighting the significance of the campaign, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “The Yamuna is not merely a river but a cultural, religious and environmental heritage of Delhi. Protection and cleanliness of the Yamuna are not only the responsibility of the government but also the duty of every citizen. The campaign is being organised with the objective of taking this message to the people and encouraging collective participation. The cleanliness of the Yamuna is not a one-day programme but a continuous public movement that requires the participation of every section of society.”
The drive will begin at 6 am and cover several prominent locations such as Geeta Colony Ghat, Nizamuddin Ghat, Chilla Village Ghat, Kalindi Kunj, Nigam Bodh Ghat, Sonia Vihar Ghat, Wazirabad Biodiversity Park and multiple stretches along the eastern and western banks of the Yamuna.
To ensure broad participation, several senior political leaders and public representatives will lead activities at various sites.
According to the government, nearly 500 social, religious, educational and voluntary organisations are expected to join the campaign, alongside thousands of Delhi residents. Participants will be encouraged to take a pledge not to dump waste, flowers, idols, plastic or other materials into the river and actively support efforts for maintaining the cleanliness of the Yamuna.
Highlighting the broader vision behind the initiative, the Chief Minister said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleanliness, environmental conservation, river rejuvenation and public participation-based development have received a new direction across the country. Inspired by the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat resolve and his vision for environmental conservation, the Delhi Government is committed to transforming the rejuvenation of the Yamuna into a people’s movement. The cleanliness of the Yamuna is not only an environmental issue but also a responsibility towards future generations. In keeping with this vision, the Delhi Government is continuously working with all sections of society to make the Yamuna clean, pristine and free flowing.”
