Customs officials at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport have booked a case of drug smuggling after seizing 17.720 kilograms of hydroponic weed (ganja), including packing material, during an operation carried out by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU).
According to Customs officials, one passenger travelling from Bangkok to Delhi on May 12, had been discreetly kept under surveillance by officers at IGI Airport, New Delhi.
“Simultaneously, another passenger arriving from Sharjah was spot profiled while crossing the Green Channel with a bag having no baggage tag. During X-ray screening, suspicious images were noticed.”
Officials said that during detailed enquiry and personal search, baggage tags were recovered from the passenger. The passenger allegedly admitted that he had been instructed to collect the bag booked in the name of the Bangkok passenger.
“Further examination of the baggage resulted in recovery of Hydroponic Weed (Ganja) weighing 17.720 kg (including packing material),” the statement added.
Customs officials said that further investigation in the matter is currently under way.
