A day after the devastating fire at a bed and breakfast establishment in Malviya Nagar claimed 21 lives, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Thursday announced a citywide enforcement drive, while political sparring intensified over alleged lapses in safety monitoring and building regulation.
Mayor Pravesh Wahi said a joint task force comprising district administration, civic officials and police authorities has begun inspections across Delhi and warned that establishments found violating rules would be sealed.
Wahi said the task force was constituted following a meeting convened by L-G Taranjit Singh Sandhu and includes officials such as district magistrates, deputy commissioners and police officers.
“Wherever violations are detected, those properties will be sealed," he said.
The mayor said the civic body is in constant touch with MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Kahirwar and field officials overseeing the response.
Amid growing concerns over fire safety compliance, MCD Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma wrote to the commissioner seeking a special fire safety compliance drive across Delhi.
