A professor of Satyawati College (Evening), University of Delhi (DU), has been suspended after he was allegedly found clicking a photograph of a female student wearing a backless dress while she was appearing for an examination on campus, triggering an internal inquiry and calls for a transparent investigation.
The incident reportedly took place during an examination held on Thursday in the college canteen, which was being used due to a shortage of examination space.
According to students present at the venue, one student noticed the professor allegedly clicking photographs of the girl who was writing her examination and alerted the student concerned. Following objections raised by students, a complaint was lodged with the college administration.
College authorities later reviewed CCTV footage from the examination venue. According to officials, the footage confirmed that the professor, identified as Md. Irfan Alam, had taken photographs of the student during the examination.
Speaking to The Tribune, Satyawati College (Evening) Principal Prof. Subhash Kumar Singh said the professor had admitted his mistake during the internal inquiry. He added that the faculty member has been suspended and a complaint has been forwarded to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of DU. A committee has also been constituted to investigate the matter and is expected to submit its report by June 20, after which further action will be taken.
Reacting to the incident, NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar said the allegations were “extremely serious and deeply concerning”, adding that any compromise with the dignity, privacy and safety of a female student is unacceptable.
He called for a fair, transparent and time-bound investigation, saying the college administration, university authorities and relevant committees must examine all facts, CCTV footage and available evidence to establish the truth and ensure strict action against anyone found guilty.
