Could Sarawakians finally see affordable flights? That’s the big question following the Sarawak government’s bold move on February 12, 2025, when it officially completed the acquisition of MASwings with zero liability.
For years, MASwings, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, has been the only lifeline for rural and remote communities across Sarawak and Sabah, providing essential air services throughout the Malaysian side of Borneo.
But despite its importance, the airline did not profited financially. According to MASwings Group Managing Director, Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, the airline “is not a profit-generating company but a public service obligation organisation,” surviving largely on government incentives rather than commercial revenue.
Why Did Sarawak Acquire MASwings?
For years, Sarawakians have voiced frustration over expensive airfares, limited flight options, and the lack of control over regional connectivity. Especially during the holiday seasons, tickets prices from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching route can soar up to RM800 for one way!
The acquisition of MASwings represents the state government’s strategic push to solve these issues. By taking charge, Sarawak aims to ensure its people have affordable, reliable air services, especially in rural areas where flights are often the only viable mode of transportation.
The Mission of AirBorneo
Following this acquisition, MASwings has been rebranded as AirBorneo, a bold new chapter for Sarawak and the entire island of Borneo. While AirBorneo will continue operating essential rural routes, it also has bigger ambitions, to become a full service regional carrier connecting Borneo to the rest of the world.
The state government envisions AirBorneo not just as an airline, but as a tool to enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and drive economic growth.
"By taking this strategic step, we are positioning and transforming Sarawak as an aviation hub for Borneo and a gateway to ASEAN," the Sarawak Premier, Abang Johari, said during the SPA signing ceremony last February.
AirBorneo isn’t just about planes and flights, it represents Sarawak’s determination to take control of its future, one bold initiative at a time.
For the people of Sarawak, this is more than a name change. It’s the start of a new chapter, where connectivity, opportunity, and progress take flight.
What Is Important for Sarawakians
For starters, this means cheaper flights for Sarawakians.
For years, affordable air travel has felt out of reach with other carriers like AirAsia. Many have voiced frustration over the high cost of travelling within and out of Sarawak, especially during festive seasons or for urgent trips.
I remembered as a Sarawakian myself, during the pandemic era, Airasia ticket to Kuching reached up to RM1,000 for a one way ticket (felt like Kuching was part of Europe or something with that fare).
With AirBorneo, the state finally has the chance to prioritise affordable and reliable air services that meet the needs of its people.
With AirBorneo, we can expect
- Flights to be more affordable for Sarawakians
- Improve access to remote and rural areas
- Create jobs and skills development opportunities in the aviation sector
- Strengthen Sarawak’s tourism industry and trade links
It’s a move designed to directly benefit the people ensuring that air travel is no longer a luxury, but a necessity within reach and to boost Sarawak's economy by putting Sarawak on the map as a reliable regional hubs.
The Sarawak government continues to focus on its people, from launching AirBorneo to improve connectivity, to announcing Free Tertiary Education for 64 courses for Sarawak-born students starting in 2026. Whether by land, air, or education, the state is determined to uplift Sarawakians and build a brighter future.
