In a concerning revelation, the state of Perak in Malaysia has witnessed a staggering surge in dengue fever cases, with the cumulative number reaching a startling 2,762 cases from January to September this year. This marks a significant increase compared to the 851 cases reported during the same period last year, translating to a daunting 224.6% rise in dengue infections.

A. Sivanesan, the Chairman of the State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs, and National Integration Committee, sounded the alarm on this escalating health crisis. He revealed that Perak had recorded one tragic death from dengue fever in Kuala Kangsar during the aforementioned period, whereas there were no fatalities during the same timeframe last year.

The situation appears to be worsening by the week, with the 39th epidemiological week this year reporting a distressing 75 dengue fever cases, in stark contrast to a mere 24 cases reported in the same week last year. Among the areas severely affected by this outbreak, Kampung Tersusun Batu 5 in the Kinta district stands out with a staggering 23 cases, closely followed by Block A (Zone 1) of the Royal Malaysian Navy Base in the Manjung district, which reported 10 cases.

Adding to the region's woes, Perak is grappling with moderate air pollutant index (API) readings in several areas, including Taiping (61), Tasek (65), Pegoh (59), Seri Manjung (60), and Tanjung Malim (78), as of 2 pm on 4th October. The deteriorating air quality poses a significant health risk, prompting concerns over respiratory issues such as coughing, flu, asthma, and eye irritation among residents.

In light of these developments, Sivanesan issued a plea to educational institutions, urging them not to conduct outdoor activities in the afternoon. This precautionary measure aims to safeguard the health and well-being of students, preventing them from exposure to hazardous air conditions. Fortunately, there have been no reported cases of individuals suffering from health problems attributed to the haze in Perak so far.

As Perak grapples with this alarming surge in dengue fever cases and deteriorating air quality, the state government, along with healthcare authorities, is expected to intensify efforts to combat the dengue outbreak and raise awareness about preventive measures. Furthermore, residents are advised to take precautions against both dengue fever and the adverse effects of air pollution to ensure the safety and well-being of their communities.
