Dept Women’s Minister Reminds Parents to Monitor Children Playing With Fireworks After Rise in Injuries

Following the rising number of cases of children getting injured after playing with fireworks, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has reminded parents to supervise their children when they are playing with firecrackers and fireworks during Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities.

In a speech after opening the “Memacu Kehidupan: Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2023” programme organised by Petronas Foundation, Aiman Athirah Sabu said that parents of children that do get injured by fireworks may be charged for neglect.

According to her, the authorities will not hesitate to take action according to the Children’s Act 2001 if neglect were to occur.

“KPWKW would like to remind parents to always monitor children who are having fun (playing with firecrackers or fireworks), because we don’t want the celebration to end in sadness.”

“Children should always be monitored and not overlooked. Therefore, we hope parents are more sensitive because we will not hesitate to take action under the Children’s Act 2001,” she explained.

According to Utusan, as of today, 5 children have been injured as a result of fireworks. The cases happened in Kedah and Terengganu.

Regarding the case in Terengganu, a boy was almost left blind while for the case in Kedah, a girl suffered burns on her body as a result of playing with firecrackers and fireworks.
