Tun Dr. Mahathir has spoken up regarding the allegation that he has ties with Israel. According to Harakah Daily, Tun Dr. Mahathir explains in detail how the allegation is false.
“Every time the PKR party or Datuk Seri Anwar is linked or accused of having intimate ties with Israel or its allies, attempts are made to bring me along with them. It is said that in addition to Anwar, I have a bond with Israel.
“Previously, in early 2012, when Anwar was asked why he said in the Wall Street Journal that he "supports all efforts to protect the security of the State of Israel - I support all efforts to protect the security of the State of Israel," which enraged Malaysian Malays, he responded that he also has a relationship with the Israeli leader.
“My letters to three Israeli Prime Ministers have been made public. The fact that the three letters issued an ultimatum to Israeli officials to fulfill their promise to recognize Palestine and end the war against Palestinians led by Arafat was not highlighted,” said Tun.
“This time, Anwar and PKR were discovered to have ties with Liberal International (LI), an organization that fiercely favors Israel, and my letters to Israel's Prime Minister were released once more.
“I do not deny that I wrote a letter to Israel's Prime Minister, but it was not in support of Israel. As previously stated, the letter encourages Israel to keep its promise to Arafat. My letters are open to the public,” said the former prime minister.
“Desperate to avoid being exposed as a liar, Anwar and other PKR officials in the government promised to take harsh measures against anyone who continued to connect them with Israel. Anwar and PKR supporters exposed my letter once more.
“In addition to republishing prior letters I sent to Israeli leaders, they also issued a letter in which I purportedly declared HAMAS a terrorist organization.
“Concerning my characterization of HAMAS as a terrorist, I responded and explained several years ago. It can be found here.
“I have no objection to anyone reading the three letters I have written to:
i) Yitzhak Rabin on December 21, 1993;
ii) Benjamin Netanyahu on 14 March 1997 and
iii) Ehud Barak on June 8, 1999.
“Attached are these letters below or can be read here: Because the letters have been republished, I believe it is vital to explain why I wrote them and the conditions under which they were written.
“First, two of the letters were responses to Rabin and Netanyahu's letters. On my own initiative, I wrote a letter to Ehud Barak. I wrote all of those letters when Yasser Arafat, the PLO's Chairman, was attempting to make the peace process he agreed to with Israeli authorities a success.
“Arafat, a Palestinian nationalist and independence warrior, is a dear friend and someone I deeply admire. It was my obligation to assist him when he signed many peace treaties with Israel, as well as at Arafat's request,” said Dr. Mahathir.
“Arafat signed the Oslo Accord I, Oslo Accord II, and the Sharm al-Sheikh Memorandum with the three Israeli leaders between 1993 and 1999.
“Those letters were written during the time period. As I previously mentioned, two of them are Rabin and Netanyahu's replacements. Perhaps they wrote to me because I am Arafat's friend, or because Malaysia has some clout in the peace process.
“Anyone who reads those letters will notice that I support the PLO's agreed-upon peace initiatives. I also stated that any engagement between Malaysia and Israel would be contingent on the outcome of the peace process,” explained Tun Dr. Mahathir.
