Every time we talk about tourism in Malaysia, we’d focus so much on West Malaysian locations. We have never really talked much about visiting places in Sarawak. It’s a shame, really, as the East Malaysian state has a few holiday spots to offer.
For the most part, Sarawak is often known as a state where people just go to visit their families (if you have families there). Sometimes, you may find people going to Sarawak for work (appointed and sent over). But if you do have any intentions to visit Sarawak other than for work or to see family, then these are a few locations you should visit. Note that you can take a couple of weeks to visit these places.
- City-hopping between the major cities
Here’s the thing about many Sarawakian cities: most are identical. Each city doesn’t often have a lot to offer in terms of touristy spots. Not putting Sarawak state down. However, when you don’t have a lot of tourist spots to offer in each city, then people don’t usually have a very good reason to stay any longer than a few days.
Most Sarawakian cities can be explored in a matter of days. You can budget your schedule. Perhaps visit one city for 2 to 3 days, then go on a road trip to the next city. Stay there for 2 to 3 days and then rinse and repeat.
2. Try all the food
The most essential part of travelling to a new place is to try all the food. Sarawak has a few good dishes to try. Some may not fit your palette but who knows, you may find a few good ones you’d like.
Each city often has a couple of spots that are well-known for their best dishes. Once you have tasted the best, you’d want nothing else.
3. Visit all landmarks
Most cities have at least one or two landmarks worth visiting. Visit those locations and take a picture to commemorate your visit to the city.
The Best Places to Visit
a. Miri
We will start from the east end to the west end. You can start with Miri first and work your way west. Miri is pretty much known as the city that attracts Bruneian locals for a quick weekend getaway. This city is one of the most happening cities in the East Malaysian state. If you wish to stay any longer, try visiting Niah caves which are not too far away from the city. They have package tours available too.
b. Bintulu
Bintulu may not exactly be a tourist place as it is largely an oil-rich city. However, in recent years it has opened a few new malls that may be worth visiting. People here love food so it’s worth trying and exploring some of the food here.
c. Sibu
Sibu is a small city in Sarawak. It does not really have much to offer in terms of shopping and whatnot. However, it does have some really good food to offer. Try the snacks they have to offer. You will not be disappointed.
d. Kuching
Kuching is the state capital of Sarawak. Besides Miri, this city is the next most happening city in the entire Sarawakian state. Not only will you find most of the international brands here, but it’s also often filled with events and things to do.
Bottom Line
Though it is a state that may not be metropolitan and whatnot, it does have a few good things to offer. Feel free to explore the state on your next trip.
