Germany's Deutsche Bahn temporarily suspended its train services nationwide on Tuesday evening following a disruption to its communications system, the state-owned rail operator said.

The company held trains at stations while technicians worked to resolve the problem, a spokesman told dpa, adding that further information would be provided as soon as possible.

Deutsche Bahn had not yet identified the cause of the disruption, chief executive Evelyn Palla told Germany's Bild newspaper.

"We are now trying to get the trains into the stations so that passengers can get off. And then we have to fix the problem, which we don't yet know," Palla said.

The disruption affected GSM-R, the digital radio system used for railway operations and communications across Deutsche Bahn's network.
