Scores of devotees staged a protest on Thursday outside the Commissioner of Police (CP) Office, seeking action against the husband of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over alleged derogatory remarks against mahant Parveen Chaudhary, head of a temple on Pakhowal Road.
The sudden arrival of hundreds of people left the police scrambling to manage the situation. Despite attempts to stop them, the angry protesters marched to the commissioner office.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kulwant Singh Sidhu, former Cabinet Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu’s wife and former councillor Mamta Ashu, ex-administrative officer Manpreet Singh Chatwal, ex-Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu and temple trustee Mohit Sood were among the protesters.
The protesters submitted a written complaint to Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rupinder Singh. They alleged that there was a financial dispute involving crores between two parties and Parveen Chaudhary was mediating to help them resolve it amicably. However, they alleged the BJP leader levelled serious allegations against the priest for political gains.
ACP Rupinder Singh confirmed the devotees had submitted a complaint. “The matter will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken after an inquiry,” he assured the protesters.
