To prevent MPs from misbehaving in the future during parliamentary sessions, it has been reported that the Dewan Rakyat is considering increasing fines for unparliamentary behaviour 10-fold from RM1,000 to RM10,000 per offence.
This was suggested by speaker Datuk Johari Abdul who also added that MPs could also face a suspension for such misbehaviour.
Meanwhile, he added that the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952 could be amended to increase the stipulated fine to punish MPs for “unparliamentary remarks” or “unparliamentary actions”
“We are moving so that this act shall be implemented, and to make sure that every MP contributes to the betterment of the nation,” he was quoted.
Back in February 2023, Johari had said that the RM1,000 fine was necessary considering some members of parliament continuously used vulgar words in the Dewan Rakyat without any sense of guilt or shame, with some of them aimed at the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker or other parliament members.
