THE Dewan Rakyat’s sitting today is set to address a range of significant issues, including the proposed Employee Provident Fund (EPF) contributions for non-citizens, the economic performance of Malaysia as reflected in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2022 to 2024, and a series of proposed legislative amendments aimed at improving domestic violence protections.
A key issue to be raised during the Minister’s Question Time is the suggestion for Employee Provident Fund (EPF) contributions for non-citizens.
Chiew Choon Man, Member of Parliament (MP) for PH-Miri, will question the Prime Minister on the potential impact of such a proposal.
Specifically, he will seek clarification on whether these contributions would place additional financial burdens on employers, and whether such a move would divert the EPF’s focus away from its core mission of safeguarding citizens’ retirement savings.
"Will the proposal to include non-citizens in the EPF system be a burden on employers, and how will this affect the fund’s primary role in ensuring retirement security for citizens?" Chiew will ask during the session.
The economic outlook will also be a topic of discussion, with Datuk Awang Hashim, MP for PN-Pendang, scheduled to ask the Prime Minister for specific details regarding Malaysia’s GDP. He will request the real and nominal values, as well as the growth rate of the GDP for the years 2022, 2023, and 2024. This will provide insight into the country’s economic performance and projections for the near future.
Another significant issue to be raised during the oral question and answer time will be domestic violence protections, particularly in relation to women.
Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, MP for PH-Port Dickson, will ask the Minister for Women, Family, and Community Development about potential amendments aimed at strengthening safeguards for victims of domestic violence.
The proposed amendments seek to offer better legal protections and support for those affected, with a focus on enhancing the protection of women.
In another matter, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, MP for PN-Kota Bharu, will address the Home Minister regarding the Quick Response (QR) codes trial for immigration clearance at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Beginning in January 2025, this system will be tested at 40 special lanes at KLIA's Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Takiyuddin will inquire about the success of this initiative in alleviating congestion at the country’s entry points and its potential long-term impact on immigration procedures.
The session will also see the tabling of nine bills for the first reading, including several significant legislative measures.
These include the Government Service Efficiency Commitment Bill 2025, the Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage Bill 2025, the Employees Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Consumer Credit Bill 2025.
These bills are expected to address various sectors, from government service reforms to environmental sustainability and financial regulations.
In addition to the first reading of the new bills, the Dewan Rakyat will move forward with the second reading of two important pieces of legislation—the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Parliamentary Service Bill 2025. These amendments will have a significant impact on the structure and functioning of Malaysia’s government and parliamentary services. – March 4, 2025
