Lionel Messi has faced criticism from some fans following his recent meeting with Donald Trump at the White House.
The Inter Miami star visited Washington last Thursday as part of a ceremony recognising the club’s MLS Cup triumph, with the US president welcoming the Argentine star and several teammates during the event.
While the occasion was meant to celebrate Inter Miami’s success, images from the meeting quickly circulated online and sparked debate among football supporters about Messi’s involvement.
Viral Diego Maradona video resurfaces after Lionel Messi’s White House visit

Following the event, a video of Diego Maradona speaking about the United States resurfaced on social media and quickly gained traction among fans.
The clip shows the Argentine legend explaining how he once rejected an award from the US while praising Cuba.
Maradona said in the video: “The Americans gave me an award. They gave me one in Cuba as well. I told the Americans: ‘Keep it for yourselves, I’m getting one in Cuba!’”
Maradona was known for his outspoken political views during his lifetime and maintained close relationships with several left-wing leaders, including Fidel Castro.
On the other hand, Messi – who is rarely seen involved in political controversies – has now been spotted alongside Trump, while the United States recently started a war against Iran.
Fans slam Messi in comparison to Maradona
The debate quickly spread across X, where several fans compared Messi’s actions with Maradona’s political stance.
One user wrote: “Contrast that [Maradona’s video] with Messi clapping like a trained seal for Trump today.”
Another fan commented: “This image is a huge stain on Messi’s legacy. Keeping quiet while Trump talks about bombing countries, literally threatening to kill anyone who opposes him. Not everything is the same. He’s not ‘just anyone’.”
“As great of a player Messi is, Maradona will be undisputed GOAT forever. Not only on the pitch but he took stances and spoke his mind, didn’t care who he offended. Never bent the knee,” a third supporter added.
