Fancy scaling up steep challenging tenuous trails and paths 207 meters above sea level just to whet their appetite for a plate of pandan-flavoured nasi lemak and ayam masak rempah! That's exactly what regular hikers and food hunters do every weekend at Bukit H in Semarak, Sungai Petani. Visitors including children on tow look forward to thronging their favourite weekly breakfast joint, Pondok Sarapan Pak Yusoff, nestled among the luscious canvas of vibrant flora and fauna on this modest hill.
Operating only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from morning till noon, this eatery is the latest popular haunt for breakfast hunters. Bukit H which was once the scaling spot only frequented by hikers and HHH members, took a dramatic turn of events when the owner of part of the hill, Haji Yusoff decided to open a humble stall serving breakfast for the avid hikers and recreational visitors.
Pak Yusoff as he's fondly known, assisted by his daughters and sometimes his grandchildren dishes out his signature breakfast, nasi lemak pandan which comes together with ayam masak rempah has become a craze amongst his customers. To complement his sale he also serves laksa kayangan together with hot and cold drinks to whet the appetite of his customers. His customers, comprising people of all walks of life and race, dine freely without any apprehension as food is the language of solidarity at Pondok Sarapan Pak Yusoff.
Come weekends, breakfast time turns into a festive mood with hikers chatting and sharing stories about their exploits and noisy children scurrying around the stall showing their antics. The atmosphere at the stall is made more picturesque with the facade of Penang Island becoming the backdrop of Pondok Sarapan Pak Yusoff. The enterprising Haji Yusoff creatively added some elements of recreational features such as the Infinity swing, tangga seribu and climbing ropes to keep the children at bay while their parents and hikers are kept busy at their rendezvous. The sprawling town of Sungai Petani has added another feather in the cap in turning the bustling town into a place worth visiting besides the scenic Gunung Jerai, Pantai Merdeka and Bujang Valley Geopark thanks to the brilliance of Haji Yusoff.
