MANILA, Philippines — Discord has been banned while Reddit was allowed to continue its services after the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the two social media platforms in the wake of the school shootings in parts of the country.
The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said its order to Discord issued Wednesday night applied to users of Globe Telecoms and DITO.
“Access to this website has been blocked in accordance with the directive of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), as determined and identified by relevant government agencies,” the notice read for Globe users.
The directive followed the recent school shootings in South Cotabato, Zamboanga City and Tacloban City over the past few months.
Meanwhile, Reddit said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) sent removal requests over content that allegedly "defamed politicians and public figures."
"None of the reported content was removed as there were no Reddit Rules violations and the content involved criticism of public figures, claims of their involvement in corruption, and general commentary on newsworthy events,” it said.
