DMCI Mining to keep planting trees at Berong

DMCI Mining Corp., a subsidiary of listed DMCI Holdings Inc., will continue planting trees at its Berong mine site in Quezon, Palawan until the end of rehabilitation period next year.

“We will be continuously planting in those areas,” DMCI Mining Vice President Ramon Briones told reporters Friday.

“[We will plant] maybe 250,000 to 300,000 seedlings,” he added.

Berong Nickel Corp., a DMCI Mining subsidiary, was said to have already planted nearly 352,000 seedlings and produced over 497,000 seedlings in its nurseries exceeding year four targets under the six-year rehab program.

The Berong Mine covers a 288-hectare mineral production sharing agreement area with 137 hectares mined and 151 hectares left undisturbed. To date, 100 hectares have been rehabilitated, DMCI Mining said.

The company said it had spent P168.3 million from June 2022 to August 2026 for the restoration of the site, which was also said to be on track for completion and turnover to the government in 2027.

“We’re actually ahead of schedule,” DMCI Mining President Tulsi Das Reyes said.

“One of the things we’re doing is being very over-compliant there. [We] want to show that we’re really committed.”

Since mining activities at the Berong mine in Quezon, Palawan concluded in 2021, Berong Nickel has shifted to implementing a six-year final mine rehabilitation and decommissioning plan — the first approved for a nickel mine in the Philippines.

Shares of DMCI Mining’s parent company DMCI Holdings closed up P0.23, or 2.97 percent, at P7.98 each on Friday.
