DMW assists Filipino seafarer injured in Persian Gulf drone attack

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has provided assistance to a Filipino seafarer injured in a reported drone attack on an oil tanker in the Persian Gulf, while the vessel's 24 other Filipino crew members were reported safe.

In a statement posted on DMW's social media page on Oct. 13, the agency said the seafarer was injured when the oil tanker ACER was reportedly attacked by three drones on Oct. 7.

The Filipino crew member was rescued by the Qatar Navy and Qatar Coast Guard and brought to Hamad General Hospital in Doha, Qatar, where he is receiving medical treatment.

The Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) in Doha, led by Labor Attaché Eduard C. Ferrer, visited the seafarer at the hospital and provided clothing and other assistance to address his immediate needs.

The DMW said its teams would continue monitoring his medical condition and coordinating welfare assistance to support his recovery and eventual repatriation.

Meanwhile, MWO Qatar coordinated with the local manning agency to verify the whereabouts and condition of the other 24 Filipino crew members aboard the vessel.

According to the agency, the remaining crew members were safe and en route to Dubai, where the vessel was expected to anchor.

The DMW said it would continue coordinating with relevant authorities and agencies to provide assistance to Filipino seafarers affected by emergencies and maritime security incidents.
