The Communications Ministry has tweeted an infographic to outline the list of agencies under its purview. As announced earlier, the ministry which is currently led by YB Fahmi Fadzil will oversee most of the media and information agencies such as RTM, JaPen, J-KOM, IPPTAR, Bernama, FINAS and MyCV, as well as the telecommunications regulator, the MCMC. Interestingly, the infographic also indicated the status of other important agencies such as Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM).

As shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), DNB which is Malaysia’s single 5G wholesale network, will be placed under the Digital Ministry which is currently led by YB Gobind Singh Deo. Other agencies under the Digital Ministry include the Personal Data Protection Department (JPDP), MDEC and MYNIC. Under DNB, it is still listed that the placement is still under discussion and a final decision will be made soon.

Meanwhile, CSM which is currently under the Communications and Digital Ministry will be placed under the purview of the Prime Minister Department. CSM initially started as MyCERT in 1997 as a unit under MIMOS and then, it was spun off as a separate entity under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in 2005. Eventually, it was renamed CyberSecurity Malaysia in 2007 before it was transferred to the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia in 2018.

Interestingly, MAMPU, the agency in charge of modernisation and transformation of public services is not listed. As announced last week, MAMPU which is currently under the Prime Minister’s department will be placed under the Digital Ministry.

It is odd to see Digital Nasional Berhad and the MCMC being placed under separate ministries. DNB is a telecommunications infrastructure company which is regulated by the MCMC. Earlier this week, Fahmi said the only thing digital about DNB is the name as it is still an infrastructure company. At the time, he said the government hasn’t decided whether the 5G network will fall under him or Gobind’s newly created ministry.
