In case you’re not aware, durian and papaya are listed as Malaysia’s national fruits. In a Facebook post by ASEAN Skyline, Asian SEA Story has also recognised durian as the national fruit of Indonesia and Singapore.
According to the list, mangosteen and dragonfruit are listed as the national fruits of Thailand and Vietnam, respectively. As for other Southeast Asian countries, the Philippines has listed mango as its national fruit, while Myanmar and Cambodia have chosen cucumber trees and bananas as their national fruits, respectively.
But, does Singapore have places to grow durian trees?
According to Durian Delivery SG, an online durian delivery service provider in Singapore, the answer is yes. Pulau Ubin is one of the places where you can find durian trees in Singapore, other than the Nee Soon Swamp Forest.
They even have a native durian – Durio singaporensis, commonly known as Singapore Durian, which you can read more about here.
However, the website mentions that the best alternative to Singapore’s native durian species is the imported durians that are sold in Singapore.

Social media users, on the other hand, couldn’t take the list seriously, and many shared their take on durians being listed as Singapore’s national fruit.
Many highlighted that the best King of Fruits in Singapore come from Malaysia, particularly those bought from Pahang like Raub and Bentong.
“Do Singaporeans grow durian trees in their hearts?”
Some were also not aware of the locations in Singapore that grow durian trees.
“I can’t even see 1 durian tree in Singapore. How is it a national fruit?”
“Singaporeans grow durian trees on the rooftop. If you don’t believe me, go check it out,” a netizen joked.
