The Unity Government is set to celebrate its first anniversary soon. It was reported that the event aims to showcase the government’s latest policies and efforts, increase public awareness of its objectives, and strengthen citizens’ trust in their leadership. To me, this is a big ‘No, No’.

It is not only a waste of public funds when our nation is facing massive financial problems and our rakyat is struggling with so many issues personally and as a community. Any funds allocated for such a celebration must be put to better use to alleviate the various woes around us.

I also see this planned celebration as a total waste of resources in civil service. The man hours needed should be redirected to speeding up pertinent issues that needed attention. We are all familiar with long queues at various departments just to get things done or investigative cases that have spanned through years. What about the increasing traffic problems – traffic jams or simple irresponsible parking in many places? An efficient civil service cannot be hidden. It is easily identified. Then the rakyat will know that the government machinery is functioning well. This is turn increases our trust in the government. A taste of the end result of our government’s latest policies and efforts is surely better than being informed of what those policies are.

For us, the rakyat to trust the government, I feel that there must be a clear demonstration of truth, justice and righteousness in all her actions, regardless of one’s skin colour or status. It is not a one-time effort or a specially planned event or celebration. It is an ongoing progress, a continual revelation of the effectiveness of whatever policies that have been in place.

Within this year of MADANI government, I must say that many positive steps have been taken and good results achieved. Yet, there are also various mis-steps which have caused our nation to stumble, causing cracks in our unity, and resulting in various problems. So, to all in our MADANI government, please focus on the important issues affecting our small but beautiful nation. We want to listen to wise and mature debates in all our parliamentary meetings. We want to see both the ruling government and those in the opposition coming to a consensus in issues that will move our nation forward. We want to see unity and harmony strengthened in this multi-racial nation.

In short, we simply do not need a 3-day event of celebration. We need all our leaders to put aside all selfish agendas, be courageous and unite for the sake of rebuilding this nation. We need our leaders to be humble to ask for wisdom in all that you have been tasked to do. We need our rakyat to be fair realistic in our expectations and assessments so that all our leaders can encouraged to work diligently for the sake of this nation.

God bless all of us with great wisdom as we ask for wisdom in all that we say or do.
