A woman doctor was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her residence in Kewal Vihar here, prompting police to register a case of abetment to suicide against her estranged husband following allegations made by her family.
The deceased, Dr Meenakshi Sood, was posted at Civil Hospital, Kapurthala. She was married to Dr Piyush Sood, an eye surgeon and owner of National Eye Care Hospital in Jalandhar. The couple had been married since 2018 but had been living separately since last year.
According to police, Dr Meenakshi was found lying on the floor of her house after officers gained entry by breaking open a window. She had reportedly not responded to repeated doorbell rings or phone calls.
Following a complaint by the victim’s family, the police registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Division No. 6 police station. However, her parents have alleged that she was murdered and have demanded a thorough investigation.
The exact cause of death will be determined after a post-mortem examination, scheduled to be conducted at Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, said an official.
Parmod Kumar, the victim’s father, who hails from Fazilka, alleged that his daughter had discovered her husband’s extramarital relationship with a hospital employee in 2023. He claimed she had obtained CCTV footage allegedly showing the two together and had shared it with her parents.
“We wanted the marriage to survive and counselled her husband after the matter came to light," Kumar said.
He further alleged that Dr Meenakshi had financially supported her husband in establishing his private eye hospital by raising a loan of Rs 45 lakh. However, she was devastated after learning of the alleged affair in December 2023.
Kumar also accused Dr Piyush of subjecting his daughter to domestic violence and attempting to strangle her. He claimed that due to the deteriorating relationship, Dr Meenakshi began living separately in July 2025.
The victim’s father further alleged that while applying for a home loan recently, Dr Meenakshi discovered that a loan of Rs 2.5 crore had allegedly been taken in her name without her knowledge. According to him, she had never applied for such a loan and believed it had been fraudulently obtained by her husband.
He said Dr Meenakshi subsequently sought a mutual divorce and demanded repayment of the alleged Rs 2.5 crore liability as well as the Rs 45 lakh loan she had previously repaid. He further alleged that she had been receiving threats from her husband.
Investigating officer ASI Satpal Singh confirmed that a case had been registered and said further action would depend on the findings of the post-mortem examination and other evidence collected during the investigation.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
