The NHS has made an urgent appeal for more blood donors after it issued a national alert over shortages of certain blood types.

National stocks of O negative and O positive blood have fallen to “unprecedentedly low levels” after increased demand from hospitals and high levels of unfilled appointments at donor centres created “a perfect storm”.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Friday 26 July, Dr Amir Khan made an appeal to viewers, urging them to give blood if they can.

“When you give blood, it really does save lives,” he said.

“Please do come forward.”
