DOE: P5.27B Boracay power project almost done

THE P5.27-billion Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay Transmission Line Project is 93.16 percent complete, following inspections by relevant agencies, the Department of Energy (DOE) said on Thursday.

The project intends to strengthen the power transmission backbone serving Boracay and surrounding areas, improve grid reliability, and support rising electricity demand from tourism and economic activity.

On April 14, officials of DOE, the Energy Regulatory Commission, National Transmission Corp., and National Grid Corp. of the Philippines

conducted a site inspection of the project.

“We are fast-tracking the completion of this critical project because reliable power is fundamental to economic growth, public service, and the continued development of Boracay and the rest of Aklan,” Energy Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara said, adding that the DOE is committed to ensuring the project’s adherence to “the highest standards of safety, quality, and long-term reliability.” Several components of the project have already been operational, including the Nabas Substation in December 2023 and the rehabilitated Unidos-Caticlan Transmission Line in February this year.

Other segments, including the Caticlan-Boracay Power Cable and Cable Transition Station, are 99.92 percent complete, while underground cable works are being conducted at night in compliance with airport safety regulations, with full completion targeted by August.

Once fully completed, the project is expected to benefit more than 155,000 households, as well as thousands of commercial and industrial companies in Aklan, the DOE said.
