Does the UK have a maximum working temperature? Everything you need to know

  • The UK is bracing for its fifth heatwave of the summer, with temperatures set to soar to 36C this week.
  • Amber heat health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency for the East Midlands, West Midlands, east of England, north west, south east, south west, London and Yorkshire and the Humber.
  • While there is no legal maximum working temperature in the UK, employers are legally required to ensure “reasonable” temperatures for staff, according to the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas).
  • The service notes that employers should conduct “health and safety risk assessments” for extreme temperatures and reduce any identified risks.
  • The advisory Climate Change Committee (CCC) has previously recommended mandatory maximum temperature regulations for workers to safeguard against heatwaves.
