- High-end dog food subscription company Years has issued an urgent product recall after identifying a potential link between its buckwheat ingredient and a dry eye condition in dogs.
- The business launched an investigation on 1 August following multiple reports of dogs experiencing sudden dry eye in both eyes, recording 57 suspected cases by 16 August.
- Years has urged its 40,000 customers to stop feeding its meals to their pets immediately and to consult a vet if their dogs show symptoms including cloudiness, redness, or thick discharge.
- Affected pet owner David Felton spent around £1,500 on treatment for his six-year-old spaniel cross, Cookie, who developed bilateral dry eye disease after eating the fresh food for two-and-a-half years.
- Subscriptions have been paused for six weeks while the company replaces buckwheat with quinoa in its recipes, with Years pledging to publish the full findings of its investigation.
