From timeless songs to childhood literacy, Dolly Parton built a legacy rooted in talent, generosity and staying true to herself
Some stars leave behind songs. Then a special few leave behind a legacy of kindness that resonates through time and memory.
Dolly Parton belongs to the second category.
The singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist died on Aug 25 at 80, closing a career that stretched across more than six decades. However, reducing Dolly to her country music credentials would miss what made her such an enduring figure.
Her legacy lives in songs, books, businesses, charitable initiatives and perhaps most importantly, the way she carried herself through extraordinary fame.
She made being unmistakably Dolly Parton into an art form.
A voice that crossed generations
Parton’s career began in the mountains of Tennessee, where music was part of everyday life. Born into a large family with limited means, she grew up surrounded by songs and storytelling. Those early experiences would eventually become the foundation of her songwriting.
Her breakthrough came in Nashville in the 1960s, first through her partnership with Porter Wagoner and later through a solo career that established her as one of country music’s defining voices.
However, Parton’s greatest strength was never simply her voice. It was her ability to turn ordinary experiences into stories that felt personal to millions of people.
Jolene transformed jealousy and heartbreak into something instantly recognisable. Coat of Many Colors drew from her childhood poverty and turned an experience of being mocked into a story about pride, family and love. I Will Always Love You, meanwhile, became one of the most enduring songs of the modern era.
The beloved song went on to reach audiences again through Whitney Houston’s famous rendition.
And then there is 9 to 5 — which carried Parton’s country sensibility into mainstream pop culture while establishing her as an actress and screen presence.
However, the one beautiful thing about Parton is that she never stayed neatly within one category. Country gave way to pop, bluegrass, gospel and rock. Her 2023 album Rockstar reflected that same willingness to explore, featuring collaborations with artistes from across generations and genres.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame described her as an artiste who crossed genres and media while maintaining her authenticity. It is perhaps the simplest explanation for her longevity as Parton evolved without ever seeming to abandon herself.
Giving back with purpose
Music aside, the Southern belle’s philanthropy may ultimately prove to be one of her most significant legacies.
In 1988, she established the Dollywood Foundation, initially focusing on education in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee.
Then in 1995, she launched the Imagination Library, providing free books to young children and encouraging a love of reading. The programme was inspired in part by her father, who could not read or write.
What began as a local initiative grew into an international literacy programme that has since distributed hundreds of millions of books to children. That scale matters, but so does the philosophy behind it.
You can wish your life away. But if you’re going to dream, you’re going to have to get out and, like I always say, you have to put some wings on them dreams, and some feet and fingers and some hands. They gotta get into some stuff. You can’t just sit around and think of all the things you want to do. You’ve got to think of what you want to do, and then you’ve got to get out and make that happen.
Parton’s philanthropy often felt deeply connected to her own upbringing. She understood what it meant to grow up without much, and she always chose to direct her success towards giving other people opportunities.
Her generosity also extended beyond literacy. She contributed to healthcare, children’s hospitals and disaster relief, including substantial support for communities affected by wildfires and other natural disasters. During the Covid-19 pandemic, her US$1 million (RM4,027,500) contribution helped support research that contributed to the development of the Moderna vaccine.
For Parton, giving was not separate from who she was, as it was part of the same story — Her-story.
The woman behind the rhinestones
Parton’s public image was impossible to miss: towering hair, rhinestones and colourful outfits. She owned her hyper-glamorous, maximalist aesthetic in a remarkably humbling way. As she once said:
You’d be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap!
She understood the power of presentation while refusing to let appearance become the entire story. Behind the humour and sparkle was an astute businesswoman, disciplined songwriter and determined woman who built an empire on her own terms. Her success extended into Dollywood, which became a major attraction and economic force in her home region.
That combination of glamour and humility became part of her appeal.
Parton could make jokes about herself without diminishing herself. She could embrace femininity without allowing it to dictate her capabilities. She could become enormously wealthy without losing sight of the poverty that shaped her childhood.
Perhaps most importantly, she made kindness feel powerful rather than naive.
A legacy that feels personal
Parton’s influence is difficult to measure because it reaches far beyond record sales and awards.
She gave country music some of its most recognisable songs, generations of children’s books, her hometown jobs and investment and aspiring artistes permission to be unusual, ambitious and unapologetically themselves.
She also demonstrated a person does not have to choose between commercial success and generosity, glamour and substance, or ambition and humility.
That may be why Parton felt less like a distant celebrity and more like someone audiences had grown up with.
While her music and films will continue to be recorded, rediscovered and reintroduced to new audiences, the most important part of her legacy will be that children will continue receiving books through the Imagination Library.
And somewhere, inevitably, someone will hear Jolene for the first time and understand immediately why Dolly Parton became Dolly Parton.
