In a distressing incident in Kampung Baru, Felda Neram 1, Jabor, the police have apprehended a 48-year-old man for allegedly going on a rampage and assaulting his mother. The Kemaman police chief, Supt Hanyan Ramlan, reported that the suspect was arrested approximately 100 meters away from the crime scene at 2:30 pm.

The arrest followed a report received via the MERS 999 system from a medical aide of the Red Crescent Society Ambulance Unit in Kuantan, Pahang. The victim, identified as Noryati Akil, 64, was treated by the ambulance crew. She sustained injuries to her hand and back after being assaulted with a stick by her son, who reportedly ran amok in their residence around 9 am.

Initially, Noryati received medical attention at Cheneh Health Clinic before being subsequently referred to Kemaman Hospital for further treatment. The nature of the injuries underscores the severity of the incident, raising concerns about domestic violence and the safety of individuals within their homes.

Supt Hanyan revealed that the suspect, who tested positive for drugs, has a history of two prior records related to drug use and criminal intimidation. This information adds a layer of complexity to the case, indicating a potential link between substance abuse and violent outbursts.

The suspect is currently under investigation for criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code and causing hurt to the victim under Section 323 of the Penal Code. These charges reflect the gravity of the alleged actions, and law enforcement will delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Incidents of domestic violence are deeply concerning, highlighting the need for community awareness, support systems, and intervention measures to safeguard individuals from harm within their homes. The case also emphasizes the intersectionality of substance abuse and violent behaviour, underscoring the importance of addressing underlying issues contributing to such incidents.

As the investigation progresses, authorities will aim to ascertain the motives behind the suspect's actions and work towards ensuring the safety and well-being of the victim. Additionally, this incident prompts a broader conversation about the importance of mental health support, rehabilitation, and preventive measures to break the cycle of violence and substance abuse in communities.
