A 29-year-old Indonesian domestic worker has been sentenced to eight years and ten months in prison for sexually assaulting a 55-year-old man with intellectual disabilities. This ruling highlights the seriousness of the abuse of trust in caregiving roles and aims to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
The court found that the domestic worker, who had been employed to care for the intellectually disabled victim and his wheelchair-bound sister, used her position of trust to commit sexual offenses against the victim between January and August 2022. She performed these acts while on video calls with her boyfriend in Indonesia, who later used the footage to blackmail the victim’s family.
According to Singapore Deputy Public Prosecutor Colin Ng, the victim, who has moderate intellectual disability, was particularly vulnerable and unable to defend himself. The domestic worker's actions were premeditated, and she admitted to carrying out the assaults on her boyfriend’s orders. She feared angering him and faced threats of further retaliation if she did not comply with his demands.
The domestic worker’s actions were described as a gross violation of the victim’s trust and dignity. During sentencing, District Judge Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz emphasized the need for a strong judicial response to such heinous acts, particularly when they involve vulnerable individuals.
In her defense, the domestic worker expressed remorse and pleaded for leniency, citing her responsibilities as the sole provider for her family, including a child and three younger siblings. Despite her emotional appeal, the court’s sentence reflected the severity of the crimes and the need to deter similar offenses.
The case underscores the importance of safeguarding individuals in caregiving situations and ensuring that those who exploit such positions face appropriate legal consequences. The sentence serves not only to address the specific crimes committed but also to reinforce the broader commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society.
