Kota Kinabalu: The authorities must ensure terrorist groups like the Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf Group do not locate to Sabah to escape the crackdown in the Philippines.
Universiti Malaysia Sabah Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities senior lecturer Prof Wan Shawaluddin Wan Hassan said reports of Sayyaf members obtaining Malaysian identity cards through late birth registration exercises in Sabah’s interior is worrying, if true.
He said the recent arrest of a 53-year-old operative known as “Omar bin Harun” in Manila having Malaysia documents is indicative of the group looking at Sabah as a safe haven.
