Parties should stop channelling leaders of the past and be themselves, The Independent's editor-in-chief Geordie Greig has said, ahead of the Conservatives launching their annual party conference with a series of fresh policy proposals.
Speaking on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg (4 October), he was asked whether Tory support for the triple lock was principled or simply pragmatic, given half their voters are pensioners.
Geordie Greig said the two main parties appeared to be dividing again, with one looking back to the eighties and the other to the seventies.
"What people really like is parties with their own principles, which they reflect into the modern age," he said.
It was "much better" for parties not to "borrow clothes", he added, but to be authentic, get the arguments out there and try to win elections.
