We have a number of upcoming state elections -Selangor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah and Penang. Last month, electoral reform group BERSIH warned, “For the six upcoming state elections in 2023 — Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan — we estimate low turnout rates around 50 to 60 per cent if nothing is changed in election planning. BERSIH suggested an early announcement of election dates so that Malaysians can make arrangements to return to their hometowns to vote.

Just like any previous elections campaigns, we have all kinds of lies, half-truths and misleading statements going around. The attack comes strong in all forms from many quarters - seasoned leaders who have fallen from their high ‘thrones’ as well as others are not so seasoned in their present positions of authority. All kinds of mud-slinging are made against individuals and political groups.

It is so easy to believe a lie. It is so easy to give in to the carrot that dangles before our eyes. That is why many are scammed of their hard-earned savings. That is why we end up making wrong choices and suffer the consequences.

As the six state elections draw near, may we take heed, be alert and not let lies, falsehood or greed blind us. Let us all be fair and honest in all that we have observed and tasted. Let us be brave to make right choices, not only for ourselves but for our future generations.

Since Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (DSAI) was appointed as our tenth Prime Minister, we have seen various positive changes. With a unity government, DSAI has to walk a tightrope to be fair to each representative group as the nation wrestled with so many problems. We have seen DSAI take on the bull of corruption by its horn as various initiatives are taken. A recent effort to get successful corporations  to have a positive role teaching marginalised citizens to fish rather than simply giving them handouts is indeed laudable. We have also seen various ministers working very hard to revive and restore this nation to her former glory. So, let us be very appreciative of all the work they are doing. Let us be grateful for the stability of governance and stand behind DSAI to ensure that Malaysia is led by upright Malaysians of great caliber.

So, fellow Malaysians who are from Selangor, Kelantan, Trengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah and Penang, do make it a point to exercise your right to vote. Sound it out loud and clear that we want a stable government made up of matured parliamentarians.

Together we can build and make Malaysia better!
