Malaysia’s next-generation MyKad has just started rolling out this week but its redesigned appearance appears to be causing issues with some electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) systems.
A newly issued MyKad holder who tried to verify their identity on the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app found that the new card was rejected during the eKYC process. An error message “Invalid ID type” pops up after scanning the new IC.
Besides TNG eWallet, we also confirmed that the new MyKad was also rejected during the eKYC process of Ryt Bank, Aeon Bank and GXBank as shown above.
New MyKad design may require eKYC updates
The new MyKad which began rolling out on 17 September comes with a refreshed layout and 53 security features.
One of the most obvious changes is the position of the cardholder’s photo, which has been moved from the right side to the left, similar to Malaysia’s current driving licence.
Since many eKYC systems require users to scan both the front and rear of their MyKad, some platforms may not recognised the new layout. As a result, these system may require updates to support the new MyKad design.
For now, it is unclear how widespread the issue is and whether other banks, eWallets and other digital systems are similarly affected.
Chip moved to the rear
Another major change is the position of the physical chip. On the existing MyKad, the chip is located on the front but on the new version, it has been moved to the rear.
As a result, users would need to insert the card differently when using physical card readers. This includes terminals used to verify BUDI95 eligibility at petrol stations.
The new MyKad also uses a dual-interface chip which supports both contact-based reading and contactless NFC.
Another major omission is the lack of embedded Touch ‘n Go card on the new MyKad. This means if you are currently using your IC to pay for tolls and public transport, you’ll need to get a standalone Touch ‘n Go card when you switch to the new MyKad.
No need to rush to replace your MyKad
JPN has confirmed that existing MyKad cards remain valid and Malaysians are not required to replace them immediately unless absolutely required.
Continuing to use your current MyKad will not affect existing government services, subsidies or cash aid programmes.
Given that some systems may still need time to adapt to the redesigned card, there is little reason to rush to replace an existing MyKad that is still in good and working condition.
