SABAH ports could eventually replace diesel-powered berthed ships with electricity under a Shore Power proposal aimed at reducing pollution and easing the impact on nearby communities.
Moyog Assemblyman Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin proposed the initiative during debate on the Sabah Ports (Privatisation) (Amendment) Enactment 2026 Bill.
He said Shore Power, also known as Onshore Power Supply, would allow ships to switch off auxiliary engines and draw electricity from the land grid, a system already used at major ports worldwide.
He said vessels currently rely on diesel-powered auxiliary engines while berthed, raising fuel costs and emissions.
He said key ports including Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau and Lahad Datu could benefit through lower fuel use, reduced maintenance costs and improved competitiveness.
The system would also help cut carbon emissions, air pollution and noise, benefiting workers and nearby communities.
Donals said environmentally friendly facilities were increasingly important as shipping companies adopted greener practices aligned with ESG principles and sustainability goals.
He said Sabah’s renewable energy potential, including solar and hydro power, could support future Shore Power operations.
While acknowledging the need for investment in electrical infrastructure and cooperation among agencies, he said the long-term economic and environmental benefits outweighed the initial costs.
