KOTA KINABALU: Two transplant recipients underwent successful cornea transplant surgeries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) on Jan 10 and 11, respectively.

Sabah Health Director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin in a statement, here, Sunday, said both recipients are currently stable and on the mend.

The organ donation was finalised on January 8 when the 38-year-old donor, Cospermas Gugkang, was proclaimed dead at the QEH after being confirmed to be brain dead.

"Despite their grief at the loss of a dear family member, the deceased's family has generously donated a pair of corneas for the purpose of transplant to patients in need after being informed about the deceased's condition and the option of organ donation," she said.

Dr Rose offered condolences on behalf of the State Health Department, as well as sincere admiration and gratitude to Cospermas’ family for providing a new ray of hope to patients in need through this gift of life.

The Sabah State Health Department also hopes more people will sign up as organ donor pledges using the MySejahtera app to support patients in need.
