DOST seeks more experts for priority fields in ‘27

THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) plans to bring in more experts in priority areas beginning in 2027 as it moves into the next phase of its Science and Technology (S&T) Fellows Program.

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. made the announcement Wednesday during the 5th S&T Fellows Convention in Muntinlupa City, where he outlined the program’s five-year record and the department’s plans for its next phase.

“The goal is not simply to increase the number of Fellows. It is to bring the right expertise to where it can create the greatest impact,” Solidum said.

Based on figures presented by Solidum, the program has engaged 84 individuals since its establishment in 2021, with 51 fellows currently active across DOST research and development institutes, councils, collegiate advisory bodies, and regional offices.

The program was established to strengthen scientific and technical capability within DOST and provide expertise for research, development, and innovation activities.

Solidum cited the Covid-19 pandemic as one circumstance that underscored the need for expertise to respond to immediate challenges.

“We cannot prepare for the future only by responding to the problems of today,” he said.

Among the projects highlighted in his presentation were initiatives involving aquaculture, public health, nuclear technology, energy, wastewater treatment, advanced manufacturing, education and regional development.

The next phase of the program will cover 2027 to 2031, with emphasis on leadership, collaboration and implementation of projects developed by the fellows.

“Five years is not our finish line — it is our foundation,” Solidum said.
