MANILA, Philippines — In addition to extending vehicle registration validity, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) is considering a proposal to require Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) stickers to be included in all new vehicle sales.

The suggestion, raised during an interview with Secretary Giovanni Lopez, aims to ease the tollway experience for motorists by integrating the essential sticker directly into the vehicle purchase process. RFID is the primary electronic payment system for the country's expressways.

Lopez acknowledged the merit of the idea and stated his intention to coordinate with major tollway operators on the matter.

"I'm going to coordinate with our bosses, Boss MVP and Boss RSA," Lopez said, referring to Manuel Pangilinan of Metro Pacific Tollways and Ramon Ang of San Miguel Corporation's tollway unit.

The goal of the discussions would be to potentially implement a streamlined "one RFID" system nationwide, eliminating the need for multiple stickers from different toll operators.

Lopez clarified that the new five-year registration policy does not alter the requirement for Compulsory Third Party Liability (CTPL) insurance. Motorists must still renew their CTPL coverage annually, as it remains a mandatory prerequisite for vehicle registration.

The proposed RFID measure and the confirmation on insurance rules come alongside the DOTr's announcement to extend new vehicle registration validity from three to five years, set to take effect on February 15.
