Accusing the police of negligence, residents of Gumtala village, along with several organisations, have announced a protest scheduled for May 28, and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused in an alleged double-murder case. They have also sought the suspension of the SHO concerned.
Jagtar Singh Karampura, district secretary of the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI), said the incident took place on April 22 near Blue Valley Colony.
Two youngsters from Gumtala village were allegedly attacked with murderous intent, he added.
The victims, identified as Surjit Singh (17) and Lovepreet Singh, aka Labha, (21), were allegedly assaulted by the Sarpanch of Haer village, along with two to three unidentified persons.
Both injured youngsters were rushed to Hartej Hospital, where doctors declared Surjit dead.
Lovepreet was admitted in critical condition, and remained unconscious for several days before succumbing to his injuries on May 3.
Karampura alleged that, despite repeated requests, the SHO of the Cantonment police station initially refused to register a case. He said, following a protest by the family and villagers, the police registered an FIR against the accused.
However, residents claimed that no arrests had been made so far, and accused the SHO of shielding the accused. They said a delegation had met the Police Commissioner, demanding strict action and the suspension of the SHO.
Subsequently, SP (Investigation) Ravinderpal Singh Sandhu was assigned to probe the matter, but villagers alleged that the police had still failed to act.
