THE Federal Government has allocated RM5.4 billion under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12) for 22 water-related projects in Perak, comprising 20 extension projects and two new initiatives, announced Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Speaking at the National World Rivers Day 2025 celebration at Sungai Batu Tegoh here, Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water, expressed confidence that the completion of these projects by agencies under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water (PETRA) will provide more reliable water supply, reduce disaster risks, and create new economic opportunities based on sustainable water resources.
Among the agencies involved are the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (JPS), the Water Supply Department (JBA), and the Sewerage Services Department (JPP).
“I hold great hope to see integrated and sustained efforts from all agencies and communities, particularly at the federal and state levels, to safeguard and preserve our rivers and waterways,” he said.
Fadillah highlighted the selection of Sungai Batu Tegoh as the host for this year’s event, noting its natural beauty and clear waters attract visitors to Perak.
The river is also home to the National River Trail Project (DSK), completed in 2024, which demonstrates that rivers can serve not only as water sources but also as recreational hubs fostering local economic development.
“This project connects people to the river, builds a sense of ownership, and opens economic opportunities through ecotourism and community activities. This is the essence of inclusive development,” he explained. - October 4, 2025
